Fire Prevention Week Kicks Off

Governor John Kitzhaber has declared this week “Fire Prevention Week” here in Oregon.

This year’s focus is on kitchen fires, specifically cooking safety.

Local fire officials we spoke with say the concern is right where it should be.

“The leading cause of home fires is cooking fires in general, and of that, range tops and stuff count for about 84-percent of those fires,” said Brian Fish from Medford Fire.

With the holiday season approaching, officials do have a few safety tips:

-Always stay in the kitchen when using your stove-top.

-Keep the area clear from things that can easily catch fire, like oven mitts or towels.

Fire Prevention Week will run through next Saturday.
