High speed chase lands man in jail

Medford, Ore. — A driver took off from police Tuesday night, and led them on a high speed chase down Highway 99.

Phoenix police said they tried to stop a white truck around 10:30 on Main Street and Fern Valley Road but said the driver, Michael Baker, sped off.

Police said he was driving up to 90 miles an hour before sheriff’s deputies set spike strips on South Stage and Highway 99. Three of Bakers tires blew out, but he kept driving.

Finally a pit maneuver stopped Baker on 13th and Riverside in Medford. He was taken to the Jackson County Jail. Police said they’re investigating whether the vehicle was stolen, but said Baker told them he drove off because he didn’t have a license.

“He went from getting about a $400 traffic citation for driving while suspended to now he’s being charged criminally with the two crimes and he also got the traffic citation,” Phoenix Police Chief Derek Bowker said.

Baker is facing attempt to elude and reckless driving charges.
