Jackson County Health on Zika Virus

Medford, Ore.– Jackson County Health and Human Services said to postpone travel plans to places with Zika virus if you’re pregnant.

Officials with Jackson County Health said there have been 4,000 cases in Brazil, but only 20 percent of individuals infected have symptoms.

Medical Director, Jim Shames, said the mosquito carrying the virus isn’t found here locally. However, he urges expectant mothers to be careful, wear long sleeves and limit travel abroad.

“If you could potentially get pregnant or are pregnant that you consider postponing that travel, that would be the primary advice,” Shames said.

Zika is a virus transmitted by a Aedes mosquitos, which carry diseases across tropical and sub-tropical regions around the world.

Josephine County health officials have confirmed two suspected cases of the virus.
