Kindergarten registration down in Medford, up for charter schools

Medford, Ore. — Are your kids registered for school yet? Waiting lists are becoming a trend among local charter schools. Meanwhile, the Medford School District says the incoming kindergarten class is currently smaller than normal.

“In the past five years, we’ve had 70 to 75 class in a kindergarten class,” District Representative Natalie Hurd said. “Right now, we have 40 registered, so that’s quite a few less.”

While the district is behind right now, next week is a good time for parents to register their little ones.

“We have what we call kindergarten soft start which is next week, and it’s a really fun week for kids to come in and meet their teachers and look around the school,” Hurd said.

If you aren’t sure which school you should be registering at, the Medford School District has a search tool on its website. For more information, click here.

Meanwhile, local charter schools are seeing an increase in students. Kids Unlimited Academy is full, with a wait list of 350 to 400 kids. Madrone Trail Public Charter School is also up in attendance, with waiting lists for every grade.
