Man arrested after stand off with police at state park

GOLD HILL, ORE. — A standoff came to a peaceful end at Valley of the Rogue State Park in Gold Hill.

The stand off began around 10 Thursday morningwhen officers were responding to a report of an alleged assault that occurred between a man and a woman, Wednesday night.

Oregon State Police and Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies were called in,after officers say 56 year old Charles Preston Ulmer III, locked himself inside his travel trailer in the campground area of the park.

After 6 hours, and multiple attempts to contact him,SWAT teams were able to use some sort of chemical to get him out.

“There were some chemicals used by the tactical team because he wasn’t coming out, he wasn’t cooperative. He had made several statements that he wasn’t coming out and so we made different attempts at different levels of force and different level of chemicals,” said Lt. Kelly Collins, Oregon State Police.

Ulmer, who is apparently from the Rogue Valley, was taken into custody.

Police tell us he will be charged with assault, domestic violence, and resisting arrest.

Nearby campers were evacuated from the park for safety concerns.

No injuries were reported.

The park is back open.
