Medford man recognized as a “hero”

Medford, Ore. — A Medford man is being called a hero after helping police catch two suspects in a string of crimes involving fraudulent money orders.

Mark Hawkins was given a letter of recognition Wednesday from the Medford Police Department and the U.S. Postal Service.

Hawkins said employees were notified to watch for a group of people targeting post offices along I-5 by passing counterfeit money orders.

On October 17th a man came in who matched the police description. Hawkins took action.

“If you’re able to do something to help stop crime and help make this place a better place to live for our kids and for everybody else and a safer place then do it,” Hawkins said.

After calling police, Hawkins followed the suspects when they ran, helping officers locate them.

His quick thinking led to the arrest of two people involved in the crimes. The suspects now face multiple fraud charges.
