Metro: ‘Mistakes were made’ in orangutan’s death at Oregon Zoo

Portland, Ore. — (KGW)Recent staffing changes at the Oregon Zoo were related to the death of the zoo’s Sumatran Orangutan Kutai, Metro announced Thursday.

The zoo said earlier this week that Kim Smith, who had served as zoo director since 2010, had been replaced. Veterinarian Mitch Finnegan also left.

Kutai died in January, following an illness. He was 20 years old.

“We conducted a careful investigation of the circumstances surrounding Kutais death and concluded mistakes were made and important information was not fully disclosed,” the Metro statement reads.
