More than 2,300 sea lions on Astoria docks

Astoria, Ore. — (KGW) Sea lions have returned to Astoria in record numbers.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife counted 2,340 on the docks of the East Mooring Basin last Friday.

Some, including leaders at the Port of Astoria, see the big animals as a problem. The sea lions are destroying the docks they haul out on and costing the port money because it cannot rent the space to boaters.

But others, including the Sea Lion Defense Brigade, see the animals as a great attraction and potential source of revenue for the port.

Veronica Montoya is a volunteer spokesperson for the group.
