Morning fire tears through two Medford homes

MEDFORD, ORE. – An electrical cook top is being blamed for a morning fire in an east Medford neighborhood.

The fire broke out just after 8:40 on the 900 block of Village Circle in Southeast Medford.

Firefighters from across Medford responded to the scene. They say it took them about 40 minutes to contain the fires.

“The black smoke was just billowing out of it. it covered our whole neighborhood,”said Helen Cuccia, a witness who also used to own the home that caught fire.

In a press release Friday afternoon, Medford Fire-Rescue said, “fire investigators processed the scene and determined the fire started on an electric cooktop in the kitchen.Combustible items were on top of the cooktop which ignited from the hot elements that were turned on.The cause of the fire was a result of the occupant’s actions.”

One firefighter did suffer minor burn injuries to his knees. He’s expected to be okay.

The fire caused approximately $200,000 in property and content losses to the home where the fire started and approximately $100,000 in property and content losses to the adjacent home.
