Mt. Ashland to break latest opening record

Ashland, Ore.– Doug Hamel said this is the worst year of his life. The avid skier, disappointed that Mt. Ashland still isn’t open.

“Wishing it was snowing more taking a day off with my dogs just wandering around the mountain side.”

Sunday Hamel and his ski dogs ventured through the mountain to get a sense of how much snow has fallen over the past few days. Even though it looks like a lot, it’s still far from the two feet of what is needed to open up the resort.

Mt. Ashland’s website said the base only has eight inches.

bBut snowboarder, Tyler Schilling said he’ll take whatever snow he can get.

“Just hitting some jumps, hitting some rails, just practicing before we get our actual season to open.”

Schilling said it’s the first time he hasn’t been able to use his season pass. Mt. Ashland hasn’t opened up this late since February 17th, 1977.

While opening day is still not in sight both Schilling and Hamel aren’t give up hope.

“Nothing you can do but light snow candles do snow dances and keep the fingers crossed.”
