National work zone safety awareness week

Medford, Ore — It is ‘national work zone safety awareness week’, and transportation agencies across the country are raising awareness about the importance of traveling safely through road construction work zones. Oregon State police and Oregon Department of Transportation are joining in with this year’s theme of ‘work zone speeding, a costly mistake.’

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, there were 21 fatalities in work zone crashes in the last three years.

Nationally an average of 595 people are killed in work zone crashes each year.

Studies show driver inattention and distraction are the biggest factors for those type of crashes and excessive speed is the next biggest problem.
