Neighbor across the Rogue River captures home burning

Grants Pass, Ore.– Rachel Kostrna woke up to a house engulfed in flames on Memorial Day morning.

“It was very shocking like this house is burning down.”

She captured cell phone video on the steps of her deck from across the Rogue River.

The neighbor’s home on the 4800 block of Lower River Road engulfed in flames.

“The sound even from over here and from across the river it was pretty loud,” said Kostrna.

Fire Marshall Mike Shaw with Rural Metro Fire said it took 25 firefighters from surrounding agencies, water tenders, a latter truck and a back-hoe to knock down the fire.

“With the collapse of the roof and the second story it created quite a problem for us to be able to get in there and get the fire taken care of all the way,”said Shaw.

The home belonged to Ronald and Susan Lennon. They weren’t inside at the time.

Shaw said the house is in foreclosure. NBC 5 looked it up and public records show the Lennons were notified just last week, the house would be sold at public auction to the highest bidder.”We do have witness statements that the current owners were in the process of moving out of the home and moving items out of the home.”

Neighbors told us they moved across the street we tried knocking but nobody answered

At this point Shaw said the cause is under investigation.

“Kind of pointing towards being suspicious.”

“That house has been there since I moved here and so I feel like it’s just a part of living in my house and then to see it demolish is just overwhelming,” said Kostrna.

Shaw said it took them an hour to get to the fire because people who called it in couldn’t pin-point the exact address. Nobody was injured during the fire.
