Officer injured after routine traffic stop turns into high speed chase

Medford, Ore. — One Medford Police Officer is injured after a routine traffic stop turned into a high speed chase through Medford.

Police said they pulled over 25-year-old Terrance Chavers on 8th and Chestnut a little before midnight Monday. When officers ran Chavers’ name they found he had a warrant out for a DUI and tried to arrest him.

Police said that’s when Chavers fought them from the drivers seat, started the car, and backed down the driveway before speeding off. But as he backed away the door of the vehicle struck an officer in the leg.

“It could have been much worse had the officers stayed there. The door could have pushed them over and they could have gotten pushed under the vehicle,” Lt. Mike Budreau said.

Police said Chavers got away after leading them on a high speed chase through Medford. He was later seen speeding on N. Phoenix Road without his lights on.

Officers said they found Chavers car on La Loma Drive near the Rogue Valley Manor, but Chavers was gone.

The officer who was hit sustained minor injuries. Meanwhile, that stop for a misdemeanor DUI turned into more serious charges for Chavers when he decided to flee. He’s now facing assault on an officer and eluding police.

Police are asking for your help in finding Chavers. If you have information about his whereabouts please contact Medford Police Department.
