Jackson and Coos County, Ore. — Jackson and Coos County Sheriff’s Offices are issuing an urgent warning to residents about a new telephone scam.
The Sheriff’s Offices says an unknown male caller is representing himself as someone from their office and telling people they missed jury duty and now have a warrant out for their arrest. The caller then says to avoid being arrested, they need to get a pre-paid Visa or gift card from Walgreens or Fred Meyer in the amount of $1,000 and give the caller the card number.
The sheriff’s office has reports of nearly 16 victims. People who receive a phone call similar in nature should hang up. This scam has hit several law enforcement agencies in the region.
