Police: East Vilas house fire not criminal in nature

09-12-fireMedford, Ore. – Firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire around 10 p.m. Sunday night in the 400 blocks of East Vilas Road.

The fire at a home near CJW Pallets was initially designated as an active crime scene.

Police said 61-year-old Debra Forsyth was inside the residence at the time of the fire. Firefighters found the woman dead in a bedroom.

On Tuesday, police said an investigation determined the fire was intentionally set and Forsyth had set the fire, but the death of Forsyth was not criminal in nature.

Officers said once the investigation was concluded, the rental home was turned over to the property owner. The home was demolished after it was determined to be a safety hazard.
