Predator in the closet

N.C. — (WCNC News) A North Carolina man charged with multiple sex crimes involving a teenage girl he met online has turned himself in.

Investigators arrested 27-year-old Jarred Ashley Workman late Monday afternoon. He’s charged with 11 counts of statutory rape and five counts of statutory sex offense.

Iredell County authorities say Workman met a 14-year-old girl on social media. They chatted for about a month, and then agreed to meet in the woods near the teen’s home in Iredell County.

Investigators say the teen invited Workman inside the house where he set up residence in the girl’s closet for five days.

During the day he was either in her closet or in her bedroom, and when she would come home from school or on the weekend or whatever, he would come out on evenings, said Det. Lt. Bill Hamby with the Iredell County Sheriffs Office.

The five day span, from April 27 to May 2, is when Hamby says Workman had sex with the teen several times.

The teen’s mother found Workman hiding in the closet and he ran away, but not before dropping his wallet and cell phone.
