Prescott Park also known to many as Roxy Ann Peak may soon become the new home to a new 34-four-mile world class multi-purpose trail for mountain bikers, hikers and horseback riders.
Medford city officials have been working with the International Mountain Bike Association to design the new plan.
“I would like that, i would probably do it. We have tried biking up here, definitely kinda hard, but enough room, that would be cool,” says hiker Breanna Lefebrve.
The plan includes trails that will be clearly marked and will range from very easy to extremely difficult.
“They will signpost the trailheads so that people will know what they’re getting into, and what they can expect on the trail,” says Lewis Hollingworth of the Rogue Valley Mountain Bike Association.
A new feature that is welcoming to hikers and bikers is designated trails.
Hollingworth says “if its a hike a trial then bicyclists should stay off of it, if its a cycling trail the hikers should stay off it, then we are not getting in each others way.”
Another welcome feature not at the park right now.
“They are planning on the services at the trailheads including bathrooms and parking,” says Hollingworth.
Oregon Fish and Wildlife says the new renovations would have minimal impact on the wildlife.
“I don’t think we have too many concerns, it’s the urban interface. There’s a lot of wildlife and people interaction anyway, this isn’t going to add too much,” says Rosemary Stussy of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The trail system will cost between $360,000 -$720,000, which could be partially paid for through grants.
Hollingworth says “to build the trails to the correct specs make sure that they are going to be sustainable and make sure they are not going to be disturbing natural environments at all to make sure it’s done right, phenomenal.”
City officials say this is the first comprehensive trail network plan locally.
“To have something like this in the valley for cyclists to ride on, fantastic,” Hollingworth adds.
A good resource for all those trying to stay active and healthy in Oregon.
Right now the Parks and Recreations Commission is reviewing the proposal.
It will then go to the City Council.
If approved, renovations could start as early as next year.
