Recent Snowfall Beneficial for Orchards

Meyer Orchard owner, Ron Meyer is glad we’re out of last week’s warm spell.

“Those few warm days we had are not uncommon for us in February, we call it a false spring,” Meyer said.

Snow a good thing for fruit trees

According to Meyer, helooksaftermore than100-acres of pears. He said therecent snowfall was a good thing.

“The cold weather is actually what we need right now to delay the bloom later in the Spring,” said Meyer.

He hopes it doesn’t get too warm, too soon. In fact he hopes the snow keeps coming.

Crossing fingers for cool weather

That’s because the cool weather will make it more likely for buds to bloom well into the spring.

Meyer said if temperatures skyrocket too early and buds do come out, “the more risk there is of damage from frost.”

But if forecasts hold true, the cool weather is likely to stick around for the near future…which could mean a better pear season.

Snow good for more than delaying buds

Ron Meyer also said thenewsnow will add to his water supply that he’ll use later in the season.
