Rough and Ready mill gears up to reopen

Rough and Ready Mill is set to reopen this July thanks to $5-million.

$1-million is coming from the Business Oregon Loan and the rest from state and federal tax credits.

About 30 people are already working at the mill adding equipment that can handle logs as small as 6 inches in diameter.

Back in 2013, 87 people were laid-off when the mill closed.

The owners said it was the result of erratic timber harvests.

We don’t know if Rough and Ready plans to hire back the entire work force but do know that the mill used to be the second largest employer in Cave Junction, second to Taylor’s Sausage.
