Near Fairburn, S. Dak. — A storm chaser says he was struck by lightning while shooting video out of his car window in South Dakota.

Scott Sheppard was chasing storms in Western South Dakota near Fairburn, (that’s about 30 miles south of Rapid City). Sheppard was on the side of Highway 79 shooting video out of his car window when he was struck by lightning.

Sheppard says the bolt of lightning struck his arm and continued down to the ground, blowing a hole in the road. The storm chaser apparently wasn’t hurt too badly, as he was well enough to snap these photos after the lightning strike — showing the damage to the road.

His car however didn’t fare as well; the lightning strike disabled his vehicle and it had to be towed.
