Semi and truck collide, spark grass fire on I5

I5 SEMI ROLLOVER CRASH PICAshland, Ore. — Oregon State Police and fire crews rushed to a crash on Interstate Five Sunday morning, after it was reported a semi was on fire, and the driver was trapped inside.

Firefighters say just before 10 Sunday morning, they responded to milepost 11, on the northbound side.

When they arrived, the reported fire had been put out, but the driver was still stuck.

They reported a small grass fire had started near the semi. The Oregon Department of Forestry was able to put that out, while crews worked to free the man.

“We obviously had fire, we had a rescue, and potential for fire to spread to the wildland, so when we were on scene, our assignment was extrication,” Dan Hall said, a Fire Engineer with Jackson County Fire District Five. “We stabilized the vehicle, and had to make cuts to take the roof off.”

Crews said the semi collided with a truck, and crashed on the hillside. Three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The cause is still under investigation.
