Small businesses struggle with online competition

Medford, Ore. — Local mom and pop shops are finding it increasingly difficult to compete with online retailers and bog box stores.

“I’m tired of people bar code reading us with their Iphones”

Sheffel’s Toy store owner, Linda Graham says it’s become difficult over the years with the invent of the world wide web and competing large retailers.

But she says she’s not closing.

“I’m going to test the waters just like my parents did when they first started this store. They tested the waters by bringing in toys into their antique shop. So, we’re doing the same just a little different.”

Some of the biggest issues Graham says include paying the single store manager, insurance and overhead costs. She now plans to diversify her business model.

“Instead of being focused on just toys, we’re gonna call ourselves Sheffel’s toys and more. If we can’t do it by price, we’ll do it by service.”

Sheffel’s will close during the month of January to renovate before opening with a fresh look the following month.
