‘Suspicious’ tree fire starts near transient camp

Medford, Ore. — Medford Fire-Rescue is investigating another suspicious fire that started near a transient camp Sunday afternoon.

Around 1 PM, firefighters were called out to Sky Park drive behind Lava Lanes, for a reported tree that was on fire. Once on scene, they found evidence of a homeless camp at the base of the tree.

Fire officials say they’ve been investigating a number of fires they believe could be arson near transient camps in just the past week.

“We’ve had six along the Greenway, and two in this area, within the last week,” Battalion Chief Erin Sawall said. “Obviously we’re patrolling the area, but there are numerous transient populous that are frequenting these areas.”

People in the area also reported a male transient walking away from the area shortly after the fire started. Police attempted to find him, but were unable to.

No one was injured in the fire. It remains under investigation.
