Unhealthy Air Quality in the Illinois Valley

Driving through a wall of smoke to get to the Illinois Valley.

Resident Sue Lily posts on Facebook “The air is too smoky! It’s as bad as during the fires this summer. What gives “

What gives is the smoke from some commercial burns that have been authorized by BLM and ODF.

This along with residential burns are making the air unhealthy to breath.

Deborah Carroll posts “Just a few points lower than Bejing! A breeze would be nice.”

With no breeze in sight, Chief Kamron Ismaili of the Illinois Fire District is hoping residents can help.

He says “It’s better to burn on a burn day cause it will take the smoke up and out.”

In the Illinois Valley, residents are only required to have a permit and can burn any day outside of fire season.

Chief Ismaili says “I’d rather they don’t burn any days that’s not good air quality.”

But Chief Ismaili hopes everyone will follow the Josephine County Burn Advisory even though they don’t have to.

And if they have to burn he says…

“Be mindful of where your smoke is going. Be aware that your smoke may be bothering your neighbors.”

Conditions are expected to stay this way, so residents in the Illinois Valley can expect unhealthy air to stick around mostly in

the mornings and evenings.

You can call the Josephine County Burn Information line at 541-476-wood or 9663 to find out if it’s a good day to burn.
