White water community hoping to draw more to Gold Hill

GOLD HILL, ORE. — Those looking for a bit of adrenaline this weekend don’t need to look any further than Gold Hill.

The third annual King of the Rogue competition is drawing in kayakers, rafters, and stand up paddle boarders from across the country.

Race director Steve Kiesling says, “The event is growing and we are building awareness at what a great place we have here at Tilomikh Falls.”

Kieslingis hoping to turn the falls into a world class white water park and Olympic training course, and this week he got a big boost from the state.

“The state is giving us money to do the engineering to do the white park and from the Oregon Community Foundation,” said Kiesling.

Owner of Sawyers Paddle and OarsPete Newport says when he heard about Kiesling’s vision, he jumped on board.

He recently moved his companies headquarters from Talent to downtown Gold Hill. The building takes over the old Gold Hill gas station, and will allow the community as a place to hang out.

Both Newport and Kiesling hope their efforts will not only draw in more white water rafting companies, but also more business to Gold Hill.
