Mother of 18-month-old shooting victim arrested

0614 Brooklyn Weiker, Bradley AllenDouglas County, Ore. — Deputies say they have arrested the mother of an 18-month-old boy that was accidentally shot in rural Douglas County on June 7th.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred just after 4:00 in the Idleyld Park area, northeast of Glide.

According to deputies, 25-year-old Glide resident Brookelyn Weiker reported that her 18-month-old boy was shot by an unknown man while she and the child were hiking. Weiker told deputies the man fled into the woods after the shooting.

Police said the child was taken to the hospital and eventually flown to OHSU for treatment of a single gunshot wound. He has since been released from the hospital and placed by Children’s Services with family that lives out of the area.

Deputies said Weiker had inconsistencies in her statements, and they became suspicious. Weiker eventually admitted that her boyfriend, 23-year-old Glide Resident Bradley Karl Allen, accidentally shot the child with a .22 caliber firearm. Allen, a convicted felon, fled the scene.

The DCSO said Bradley Walker was arrested the next day by detectives in Roseburg. The weapon believed to be used in the incident has been recovered.

After completing the investigation, detectives said Brooklyn Weiker helped Bradley Allen flee the scene of the shooting. Weiker has been jailed on charges of hindering prosecution and criminal mistreatment.
