Officer involved shooting in Roseburg

0519 ShootingUpdate (06/23 5:30 p.m.) — Police have released the identity of a man who was fatally shot by officers in Roseburg on June 14th.

Oregon State Police said 25-year-old Springfield resident Joseph A. George was shot and killed by police after he fired a shot at deputies from a wooded area while they were attending to a gunshot victim.

The victim has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.


Roseburg, Ore. – One person is dead and another injured after officers responded to reports of shots fired in Roseburg.

Oregon State Police said Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a disturbance in the 2300 block of Happy Valley Road on Tuesday around 3:00 p.m.

The DCSO said a citizen notification alert was released that advised residents in the neighborhood to stay in their homes.

According to OSP, deputies found a 19-year-old woman in the driveway who had been shot. The shooter was reportedly still in the area.

OSP said while police were attending to the injured woman, the suspect fired a shot at officers, who returned fire. The suspect was later found dead. Police believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said the woman was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. The incident is still under investigation, and officers have not released any further information.
