Pedestrian killed near Klamath Falls

Klamath Falls, Ore. – On Saturday around 5:30 p.m., Oregon State Police troopers responded to Highway 39 (Malin Highway) near Roberta Drive south of Klamath Falls after they received a report of a person down alongside the road. When emergency crews arrived the found a critically injured man who had been struck by a passing vehicle.

Police said an investigation revealed the vehicle was driving northbound on the highway when it hit the man, who was in the lane of travel. The pedestrian, identified as 77-year-old Klamath Falls resident James A. Wells, was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

According to OSP, Wells was trying to cross the road to get his mail when he was hit.

The driver of the vehicle was identified by police as Klamath Falls resident Eliseo Carrillo Barajas. He was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation.

Barajas was cited by driving without a license and driving uninsured.

Police reports will be given to the Klamath County District Attorney for review.
