Portland “Dreamer” released from jail

Portland, Ore. – A Portland “Dreamer” who was arrested Sunday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents has been released from a Washington jail, the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon said.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports the man was granted a deportation reprieve in 2014 as part of the Obama administration’s deferred action program that allowed undocumented children brought into the country illegally to receive two-year deportation deferments. The recipients, often called “Dreamers” were also eligible to be legally employed.

The 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, or DACA, has not been revoked by President Donald Trump’s administration.

An ACLU spokesperson said 25-year-old Francisco J. Rodriguez Dominguez was targeted by ICE agents because he pleaded guilty in December to driving under the influence of intoxicants.

The Oregon ACLU said Rodriguez Dominguez had entered a diversion program that would preserve his eligibility under DACA.

According to the Oregonian/Oregonlive, Rodriguez Dominguez was able to leave the Tacoma Jail Monday minutes after ICE officials said he would be released “pending the outcome of removal proceedings before an immigration judge.”
