Fred Meyer stores pull gender specific signs following customer complaint

UntitledPortland, Ore. — One Portland area mother was taken aback at a Fred Meyer last week when she saw gender specific signs above new holiday toy displays.

Brie Stoianoff complained to store employees, corporate officials, and posted the pictures on Facebook.

Within hours, the signs were gone.

“I was just sort of thrilled and I told my friends, hey guys, we made a difference, we can do this!”

Fred Meyer says the signs were never even supposed to be there.

Spokesperson Melinda Merrill said they were not printed this year and must have gone up by mistake.

In an effort to avoid the same mistake, the chain sent a memo to all 132 of its stores saying no “boys toys” or “girls toys” signage is to be put up.
