Oregon Tech goes pink

Klamath Falls, Ore. – The seventh annual ‘Pink Out’ at Oregon Tech was held Tuesday night.

Sporting events can trigger a broad range of emotions…and the annual ‘Pink Out’ games at Oregon Tech were no exception.

“We did this to honor Martha Anne Dow.”  Notes Oregon Tech President Chris Maples.  “To recognize her presidency, and the great things that she did for Oregon Tech.”

Former Oregon Tech President Martha Anne Dow died from breast cancer in 2007.

Oregon Tech Men’s Basketball Coach Danny Miles recalled when President Dow was falling ill:  “Just after we won the national championship in 2004, we came back from there, and (she) felt kind of sick – and she went and saw the doctor, and found out she had cancer.”

The ‘Pink Out’ games help to raise cancer awareness, and money for a scholarship in Dr. Dow’s name.

Pink Out is also personal for Coach Danny Miles, who’s a survivor of prostate and bladder cancer.

“Really wakes you up.”  Notes Miles.  “I found out 4 days after my 1000th win that I had cancer.”

Coach Miles is now cancer-free – and his fans are in the pink, too.

While ‘Pink Out’ night is one of the most important nights on the Oregon Tech basketball schedule, it’s also one of the most fun evenings.

In Tuesday night’s action, the Oregon Tech women lost to Southern Oregon University by a score of 61 to 48.

The Hustlin’ Owl men defeated the S.O.U. Raiders by 67 to 51.
