Reports: possible helicopter crash into NYC building

NEW YORK CITY (CNN) – At least one person is dead after a helicopter crashed into a New York City building.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stated, “We had a very strange, very troubling incident this afternoon here in Manhattan. A helicopter crashed into a building here.”

One witness said after a helicopter made a crash landing on the roof of a building in midtown Manhattan, “It sounded like a small engine plane at first and then I just felt the building shake.”

Nathan Hutton works in the building where the helicopter crashed. He said, “You could feel the building shake! And you could actually hear the alarms when they went off. The alarms went off, security came in, told us everybody get out of the building now. ‘Do not take the elevators, walk down the stairs.’”

More than 100 first responder units flooded the streets

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro FDNY said, “At 1:43 this afternoon, we received a call through 911 that this helicopter had crashed on the roof of this building. Local units responded in a little over four minutes.”

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo indicated the helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing and made it clear there was no indication of terrorism. He said, “If you are a New Yorker, you have a level of PTSD right, from 9/11, and I remember that morning all too well. So, as soon as you hear an aircraft hit a building, I think my mind goes where every New Yorker’s mind goes.”
