Sheriff continues effort for more jail beds in Siskiyou County

Yreka, Calif. – The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its effort to build a new jail after two tax measures intended to provide additional funding failed.

The Siskiyou Daily reports Sheriff John Lopey went before county officials Tuesday to discuss how to move forward.

Siskiyou County was awarded $27 million in state funds, but a new jail is estimated to be around $36 million.

Two attempts at passing a sales tax in Siskiyou County to make up the difference both failed, now the county is back to the drawing board.

Sheriff John Lopey expressed confidence in his staff as they continue to look into alternatives in order to prevent the forfeiture of the $27 million.
