Students head back to school without leaving their homes

Talent, Ore.  — Thousands of students are heading back to school without even leaving their homes.

More than 4,000 Oregon students are enrolled in the Oregon Connections Academy online school, nearly 300 of them in Jackson and Josephine Counties. The students interact with their teachers through phone calls, email, and video chat.

Talent mom, Heather Blom, has a fourth and sixth grader enrolled. She said her kids love the less traditional learning style and the family loves the freedom that comes with taking classes at home.

“This is a great hybrid of me being able to spend time with my kids and the do things we want to do with our day and at the same time be satisfied and think, okay, they’re actually learning the things they need for their future,” Blom said.

Oregon Connections Academy students start school next week. Instead of going back to school shopping Blom said the academy sends a box of textbooks and other supplies her kids will need for their courses.
