Surge in “drunk shopping”

New York, N.Y. (NBC) — You’re not alone if the urge to spend kicks in sometime after midnight Friday. Online retailer Lyst says orders are up 48% at 2am Friday over the same time on a Monday. Those late night shoppers spend about 30% more than their school night counter parts.

Kelli Grant, CNBC Consumer Reporter says, “It’s all about that stress relief and anxiety. They’re tired, emotionally drained, and maybe they’d had a couple of drinks looking to continue that good mood.”

And it seems women are leading the charge. Katy Lubin from Lyst says, “The pieces that people want to shop for when they’re feeling kinda sassy. Sort of a little drunk confident are the pieces that make you feel good.”

Dress sales are up a whopping 320% late Friday nights. Lingerie soars 50%, and shoe sales double, especially the expensive ones.

So what can you do to help curb the urge? Experts say always check return policies, don’t save your credit card info on line, and set up a separate email for all those offers.

“Unfortunately for shoppers the retailers are very aware this is a trend as well so they’re seeing more targeted ads,” said Grant.
