Two Oregon minors sickened by recalled SoyNut Butter

Clackamas County, Ore. – After a nationwide recall of I.M. Healthy brand SoyNut Butter and Granola, two Oregonians were confirmed to be infected with E. coli from the recalled products.

The Oregon Health Authority has said they have verified two confirmed cases of E. coli O157 infection linked to the recalled SoyNut Butter.

OHA said a total of 16 cases in 9 states have been identified as part of the E. coli outbreak. 5 percent of the cases resulted in a type of potentially life-threatening kidney failure.

The two Oregon cases were Clackamas County siblings both under the age of 18. They were hospitalized and are now recovering.

“People need to know that if they have this product in their pantries, they should immediately return it to the store where they bought it, or throw it out,” said Paul Cieslak, MD, medical director for the Acute and Communicable Disease Prevention Section at the OHA Public Health Division. “If they ate the product and are experiencing symptoms of E. coli infection, they should see their health care provider right away.”

SoyNut Butter Co. has expanded their voluntary recall to include all I.M Healthy SoyNut Butters and I.M. Healthy Granola, regardless of best buy date or variety. You can return the affected products to the store for a full refund.
