Criminal probe launched in referee hit

NC_refhit_700x394San Antonio, Texas — (KXAN)   Two  Texas high school football players who targeted a referee during a game in Marble Falls could face misdemeanor assault charges according to the city’s police chief.

The two players for John Jay High School in San Antonio will also be investigated and possibly disciplined by their school district and the University Interscholastic League.

“Bottom line is, we are involved on the criminal side of it. The UIL and school district investigation are totally separate from this,” said Chief Mark Whitacre with Marble Falls Police Department.

According to Whitacre, officers did an initial interview with the referee, Robert Watts, immediately following Friday night’s game.

“We still need to review the entire video and interview all the referees there that night. We would also like to interview as many coaches and players as we possibly can.”
