Obama pardons turkeys

NC_turkeypardon1125_700x394(NBC News) President Obama’s daughters Sasha and Malia joined him in the he White House Rose Garden Wednesday as he pardoned the 2015 National Thanksgiving Turkey.

“For months, there has been a fierce competition between a bunch of turkeys trying to win their way into the White House,” President Obama joked. “Well, today, I can announce that the American people have spoken and we have two winners. Their names are Honest and Abe. I confess that Honest looks like good eating, but this is a democracy. Abe is now a free bird. He is TOTUS. The Turkey of the United States.”

This year marks the 68th anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation.

The 2015 Turkey, named Honest, is a 40 pound bird raised in California.

Honest, along with alternate turkey Abe, was chosen by a group of California school children.

At a ceremony in the Rose Garden, the president pardoned both turkeys, keeping them safe from becoming Thanksgiving dinner.
