Yreka Police Department may close

0211 yreka pdYreka, Calif. — The Yreka Police Department may be on the brink of closure as the city’s mayor considers giving all law enforcement duties to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.

Yreka City Manager Steve Baker said Wednesday that the request came through an e-mail from Yreka Mayor John Mercier. According to the request, the city would consider a contract with the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office and effectively eliminate YPD for police services.

City Manager Baker said, “On the 18th the council will discuss the item and decide whether to move forward with doing something, or asking for more information or putting it on the agenda in the future.”

The agenda item for the February 18th meeting includes two options for the council to discuss; sending 911 dispatch duties to the county, and contracting all law enforcement duties in Yreka city limits to the sheriff’s office.
