Republican insiders turn on Trump

NC_trump161211_700x394(NBC News) Republican insiders have reportedly settled on a strategy to prevent current front-runner Donald Trump from becoming their nominee.

Trump’s call for a ban on muslims entering the United States in the wake of the San Bernardino massacre sparked a firestorm of criticism, but also support for from many Republican voters.

Still, party leaders fearing Trump is wrong for the party and could not win the White House are looking for ways to stop him.

They’re hoping billionaire donors will be able to drum up enough support for Trump’s opponents, including Senator Ted Cruz and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, to force a brokered convention.

Christie is polling second to Trump in New Hampshire, where along with three other early contest states, delegates can be awarded proportionally.

If they can prevent trump a majority of delegates at the convention in Cleveland, some hope they can deny him the nomination.

Not all are on board with the plan, however. Ben Carson has warned “if the winner isn’t our nominee, then we have a massive problem” and Trump is again warning he could make a third party run that would almost surely mean a win for the Democratic candidate.
