Black Friday not observed by Medford business

Medford, Ore. — Connecting Point has been doing what it calls an “Unblack Friday” for the last three seasons and they say they’ve done just as well as any of their competitors.

“We need to certainly serve our customers, serve our employees and serve our community, but we don’t know if opening at 3 pm on Thanksgiving day really does that,” explained General Manager Jeff Thomas.

Connecting Point Computer Center has been a locally owned, family run business for the last 40 years. And while it does well, employees knew they had to do something to keep up with big competitors over the holiday season.

“It’s hard for a locally owned business — a small business — to kinda get above the noise, so for us personally we just want to offer great service and great values every day and not worry what day of the week it is.”

That includes Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

Thomas says Thanksgiving is meant for family time. So, he’s closing his stores and encouraging his customers to come in during normal hours.

“I think we have as good of deals as you would find anywhere, I just don’t want you to have to get up at 2 am to get it.”

In exchange — customers will get the same deals they would at Black Friday sales and employees will get to spend time with their families.

One of those employees, Tom Pentland, appreciates it.

“I’m driving up to Eugene. My daughter lives there and she’s putting on her first Thanksgiving dinner,” said Pentland.

If Pentland worked anywhere else, he wouldn’t be able to spend time with his loved ones.

“It’s two and half hours to Eugene, so there’s no way we could make that fly. So I really appreciate it.”
