Concrete pit may pose health risks

Medford, Ore., — A concrete dumping site in Ashland may pose health risks.

The pit is on Glenview Drive near Lithia Park.

The Ashland Public Works Department says it’s possible former employees buried containers of herbicides and diesel oil, more than 40 years ago, which at the time was legal.

But now the department is planning a new water treatment plant in the area, which means cleaning up the concrete pit, and the buried containers could be an issue.

“We’ve been told it’s pretty likely that they are no longer harmful, but we don’t know that for sure – so before we do anything, we want to make sure that they are in fact not going to cause any problems.” said Public Works Superintendent, Mike Morrison.

The department is working with the Department of Environmental Quality to determine next steps.
