(WPTV) Florida’s Indian River County Sheriff’s Office has released video that shows a deputy being punched by a suspect before he was shot during an overnight traffic stop in Gifford.
Sheriff Deryl Loar said Deputy Chris Lester pulled over a man, identified as Andrew Jeff Coffee, 53, of Vero Beach, Fla., on a moped and asked him to take his hands out of his pocket.
Video shows Coffee refusing to comply, punching Lester, then pulling a gun from his pants and standing over him. The deputy was able to get up and fired multiple shots at Coffee.
“The subject revealed a firearm, at which point the deputy obviously engaged with him and shots were exchanged. The deputy was struck in the leg and a foot pursuit then continued. The deputy, in a courageous effort, chased him on foot and gunfire continued to be exchanged. We know the subject was struck at least twice,” said Loar.
