Fire rips through apartment, displaces four families

Phoenix, Ore. — Four families are homeless after a fire tore through an apartment complex in Phoenix.

Jackson County Fire District 5 firefighters sifted through the torched unit Thursday morning trying to find what caused the blaze.

Captain Aaron Bustard said it happened around 1:40 a.m. at Pine Meadow Estates. Bustard said when crews arrived the flames had already spread to the attic and were shooting from the roof and windows.

He said while neighbors were good about alerting each other it took a while for someone to call 911.

“Everyone thought someone else was calling so we definitely want to make sure people are calling 911 quickly,” Bustard said.

It took firefighters from multiple agencies about 40 minutes to put out the blaze. No one was injured, but one family lost their cat.

Residents said they stood outside for more than two hours before they could go back in. The unit where the fire started is a total loss. A woman who lived next door and is now displaced by the fire said she doesn’t know yet if or when she and her family will be able to move back in.
