Grants Pass sinkhole patched up

Grants Pass, Ore. — A Grants Pass street is open again after a sinkhole closed it to traffic.

The city repaired the hole on Beacon Drive near Churchill Street Tuesday.

The public works director from the city of Grants Pass says the sinkhole was around six feet in diameter.

The city says a large irrigation pipe was replaced last year with a smaller one making it prone to failure when all the rain came this past week.

There wasn’t any rupture and the pipe was still working but the ground around it collapsed.

A crew patched the hole yesterday afternoon with gravel.

The city says they believe the hole is permanently fixed but they will be monitoring it over time.

According to the city, it’s hard to predict where the sinkholes will show up, but they generally happen in older parts of town.
