Grants Pass woman free after serving sentence for manslaughter

maldonado new mug (large)Wilsonville, Ore. — A Grants Pass woman was released from prison on Monday after serving a ten-year prison sentence for killing her husband.

Wendy Maldonado pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of her husband Aaron Maldonado back in 2005. Maldonado’s eldest son Randy, who was 16 at the time, also pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges. They testified that Aaron Maldonado repeatedly abused them.

The case was the focus of an HBO documentary which followed Wendy in the days before her ten-year sentence.

Maldonado says her husband abused her, and she says she did it to keep her children safe. Both Governors Ted Kulongoski and John Kitzhaber denied Maldonado’s requests for clemency.
