Homes for Heroes

Medford, Ore — As we celebrate our veterans and the sacrifices they’ve made many of them are still seeking stable housing.

A new grant will help house homeless veterans right here in the Rogue Valley.

It may not look like much now, but the lot between Second and Jackson Streets on Front Street will soon become 17 homes for veterans and their families, helping to fill a vacancy gap in Jackson County.

“There’s just so many things and so many reasons for the needed housing,” said Cindy Dyer with Access of Jackson County.

It’s an issue far too many veterans face.

“There isn’t any availability in any housing, at least not any options, nothing that’s affordable and you need something that’s affordable so you can have a stable environment,” said Dyer.

A 1.75 million dollar grant given to Access of Jackson County will work to change that, turning the Medford lot into the 17 unit ‘Victory Place’ housing complex for veterans over the course of the next year.

“They’ll have places to live, and take care of themselves and recuperate from things they are experiencing,” said Fred Herman, the owner of the 1.5 acre property.

Herman says his work with veterans inspired him to get involved.

“I work with the American Legion just on the other side of this property and as you well know veterans are the backbone of this country,” said Herman.

That’s why Dyer says the new homes are so important.

“Housing is the foundation for any individual or family to really become stabilized healthy and become a member of the community,” said Dyer.

Access hopes to have the 17 units built and beging housing veterans and their families by the end of 2016.
