Josephine County residents voice concerns about Commissioner Hare

Grants Pass, Ore. — Josephine County commissioners met this morning, but for the second day in a row commissioner Hare’s seat was empty.

Hare is facing a DUII charge. He was in Eugene on county business last week when he was arrested. He was driving his personal vehicle and wasn’t engaged in official business at the time. During the commissioner’s meeting Wednesday several people spoke up about Hare’s behavior.

“He’s just not making the best of his life here and he needs to get out of that office,” Grants Pass resident Vivien Kirkpatrick-Pilger said. “He needs to resign.”

This isn’t the first time Hare has faced controversy and residents said they’re concerned he’s unfit to lead the county.

“He is subject to be the chairman on January 1st. Do you want someone like this to run the meetings? That doesn’t look very good,” Grants Pass resident Mark Seligman said.

Residents asked Commissioner Keith Heck and Cherryl Walker to act, but they said their hands are tied and it’s up to the voters to do something. They would need 6,000 signatures to turn into the county clerk by December 29th for a potential recall.

Tuesday Walker and Heck approved recommendations from Josephine County’s Office of Legal Counsel putting restrictions on hare to protect the county from any potential liabilities.
