Central Point grass fire burned three acres

Central Point, Ore. — A grass fire in Central Point burned three acres Saturday afternoon. But with the dry conditions, firefighters said it could have been much worse.

The fire broke out just after 3:00 near Vilas and McLaughlin.

Captain Jon Vait from Jackson County Fire District Three said the blaze broke out in a freshly mowed field.

A nearby neighbor was able to take a Cat machine and create a barrier line so nearby uncut grass wouldn’t catch fire.

Vait said the fire was human caused.

“The guy was raking hay up and bailing it so probably one of the rakes may have caught a rock or something and caused the fire,” he said.
