Jacksonville, Ore. — The cause of a fire that destroyed a historic Jacksonville home is still under investigation.
Jacksonville Fire Chief Darin Hull said they responded to the fire around 1:00 Saturday morning after a neighbor smelled smoke.
The homeowner, Beth Zitzner, rents out the home and lives across the street. She said she woke up to firefighters knocking at her door and the home the family spent years restoring up in flames.
“It was a great old house with lots of memories,” Zitzner said.
Hull said the fire started under the back deck and quickly spread to the rest of the house. It took 27 firefighters from Applegate Valley Fire District, Fire District Three, and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue an hour to put out the flames on Cardwell Court.
No one was hurt in the fire and the cause is still under investigation.
The house was built in 1860 and is one of over 100 structures in Jacksonville on the National Register of Historic Places.
